Who we are
HIV prevention in Germany is successfully divided between the Federal Institute of Public Health (BIÖG, formerly BzgA) and Deutsche AIDS-Hilfe e.V. (DAH).
BIÖG's measures are aimed at the entire population. This is done with the help of TV, cinema and radio spots, posters, advertisements and campaigns in print media and on the Internet.
We, Deutsche AIDS-Hilfe e.V. (DAH), on the other hand, as a non-governmental organization, develop measures and offers especially for those groups that are exposed to health risks from HIV/AIDS, hepatitis and other sexually transmitted infections. These include, for example, men who have sex with men, drug users, people in sex work, people in prison and migrants from countries where HIV is particularly widespread.
Our prevention work is based on the equal involvement of everyone
Deutsche AIDS-Hilfe e.V. (DAH) cooperates in HIV prevention with the BzgA and many different groups, specialist organizations and institutions. Among others, counselors in health authorities, local AIDS service organizations, other local counseling centers and doctors are extremely important for HIV prevention. A total of 130 organizations from the fields of AIDS support, prevention and drug help, as well as housing and care projects and self-help networks are integrated into our umbrella organization, which not only represents the interests of people with HIV/AIDS in public, but also in politics, science and medical research.
Our most important tasks also include providing information about HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. We specifically address those social groups for whom HIV/AIDS poses a potential threat. We support and facilitate self-help activities within these groups on the one hand, and for people who are already infected with HIV on the other.
We also offer training and further education on these topics.
We particularly want to address our members, self-help groups and other people working in this field. We also publish materials (brochures, postcards, posters, advertisements and specialist books) that are tailored to our target groups and communities in terms of content, style, motif and design and that are conceived and implemented with the help of people from these groups.
Our concept of "structural prevention" aims to influence individual behavior and social conditions (structures) in order to reduce the risks of spreading HIV, to strengthen the target groups and communities and to involve them in this concept.
Migration division of Deutsche AIDS-Hilfe e.V. (DAH)
The migration division was only established as an independent division within DAH in 2007. For various reasons, such as the migration situation in Germany, the HIV prevention work area for and with migrants developed relatively late.
Our prevention work is based on the equal involvement of migrants and their networks and communities in the prevention work. This is one of the most important sources of our expertise. If the linguistic, lifeworld and cultural knowledge of our target groups and communities flows into our planning, it contributes greatly to a better understanding of the respective lifeworlds. This makes it possible to design prevention measures for specific target groups. The Aidshilfe concept of "structural prevention" must be applied consistently, whereby the exclusion and (structural) discrimination of migrants in Germany as well as everyday racism must also be considered and combated.
Our work covers the following areas:
- Participatory development and creation of multilingual print and audio-visual media
- Conception and implementation of model projects with various migrant communities and cooperation partners at various locations within Germany (AfroLebenVoice, PaKoMi, MuMM)
- Multiplier training for migrants who (want to) get involved in the field of HIV prevention)
- Further training for HIV prevention practitioners (asylum and EU law, methods of working with migrant communities, etc. ).)
- Further training on diversity, critical whiteness, intersectionality, etc.
- Promotion of self-help, self-organization of migrants, empowerment (AfroLebenPlus, AGHNiD, meetings of HIV-positive migrants)
- Political work, anti-discrimination work
