Getting to know communities through community mapping

What is a community? What resources does it have and what needs do the people who belong to it have? Questions like these are not always easy to answer. This is where "community mapping" comes in. With this participatory method, migrants can form their own picture of their community - literally: they draw a map of their community and note meeting points, facilities, problems and other features on it. The method is also suitable for groups with low reading and writing skills.
Community members and employees of migrant organizations and other support facilities get to know the communities better through this participatory process and can thus jointly plan the next steps for improving prevention measures.
In the DAH project "Participation and Cooperation in HIV Prevention with Migrants" (PaKoMi), this method was successfully applied by members of African communities in Osnabrück and Hamburg and by Bulgarian hustlers in Dortmund, among others. The method is now used by many local institutions throughout Germany to carry out participatory needs assessments: Gangway (Berlin), Caritas (Essen), Aidshilfe Hamburg, etc.
Deutsche AIDS-Hilfe e.V. (DAH) has been offering training seminars on the practical implementation of the community mapping method once or twice a year since 2013, which are aimed at migrants as well as employees from the association and other cooperation institutions.
